In The Vampire Diaries’ second episode “The hybrid” our beloved characters are being tested. I will not go through what happened in the episode scene by scene because if you are reading this you probably watched it. The episode was both a sad and funny one, the dynamics between Damon and Elena dominate the episode. Those two are getting pushed closer together (Damon pushing Elena into the lake was a welcomed break from the intensity of the episode).
Damon: In this episode Damon is dealing with a lot, he gave up on Stephan and it eats him up inside. He doesn’t want Stephan back because he wants Elena and he wants Stephan back because he loves him. He is dealing with Andy’s death which as much as he liked to pretend was not easy on him. Elena doesn’t seem to clearly see his struggle and keeps pushing him to find Stephan. He realizes later that Stephan is not beyond saving and it hurts him to see Stephan trapped. He really loves his brother and hates him at the same time and when Damon feels too much he shuts down.
Elena: She is alone…lost and needs Stephan back because she both loves him and as crazy as it might sound he is her protector and guide to anything normal. Elena is always relentless but rarely stupid and in this episode she was both and that shows how desperate she is to find Stephan. Elena is also in need of guidance and after Damon fails her she turns to Alaric her only connection to adulthood. Elena is really trying to be put together but she has a lot of hurt and pain she is dealing with. On top of that she is taken aback by her strong feelings for damon because unlike Damon she was never open to them or about them. damon’s constant pushing her to be honest about her feelings even if she doesn’t act on them is not helping her struggle at all (say what you will those two don’t have a boring relationship at all).
Jeremy and Matt: Though I am not sure where this storyline is supposed to lead, I am giving it time.I feel so sorry for Matt and Jeremy they both live with too many ghosts…emotional ghosts. Their new found friendship is a good thing. (they should seriously ban Jeremy from using the internet, first he researches vampires then coming back from the dead and now how to talk to ghosts).
Stephan: The most lost of all, he lost himself and even though the show is showing us the soft side of Stephan I cant forget those bodies we’ve seen in the first episode of the season .Damon is brutal but quick he’s even a little bit tender with his victims, Stephan’s crimes are so animalistic and just so damn freaky. Stephan is battling the biggest baddest daemon around…himself, which makes me wonder why he is sticking with klaus…because he promised, he is afraid for Damon’s life or because deep down he wants to. I feel in need of a good reason . He was trapped on that mountain and as Elena rushes to Damon and they enter the car together there is nothing he can do but watch.
Alaric: He must be one of the angriest character in this episode and though he’s been in control in the face of everything for two seasons now is the time where he falls apart and throws in the towel…he doesn’t want to care anymore. As he is preparing to fall into nothingness Elena asks him for help then forces him to be a part of her broken family giving him a chance of a life again (there is a creepy air about Elena and Alaric’s relationship that wasn’t there before, I can’t put my finger on it but I feel it)
Caroline: Though she is not seen until the end of the episode, Caroline is the toughest character there is and she has some great adversity her coming her way, as she makes peace with her mother her father shows up to chain and torture her.
Klaus: Could we have seen the softer, melancholic side of Klaus in this episode. As his plans fall through in creating an army of hybrids, Comrades as he calls the…and I wonder does he mean friends? a family? it sort of reminded me of the monster of Frankenstein. Sitting on that log drinking beer he looked so miserable and lonely. Did his plan fail because Elena is alive? she died isn’t that the point?
There are many rewind worthy moments in this episode but the best one has to be the conclusion scene between Elena and Damon, the scene is almost an exact replica of the scene in season 2 episode 8 “Rose” where Damon first tells Elena he loves her then compels her to forget. In this scene they both now he loves her and he backs into a corner into admitting she cares for him to prove one thing that he needs her to know and admit how she feels about him when Stephan is gone.
Some might start to see that Damon is becoming more human this season and that Stephan is becoming more demonic and that could be the case but what if we are getting to know Damon and Stephan more and we as audience are starting to see who they really are. What if they way things are now has always been the case.
Here’s next week’s promo “The End Of The Affair”
One of the most anticipated shows on my list and it’s finally here. the theme is growing up, as Elena turns 18 an atmosphere of maturity dominates the episode, the characters seem older and more established.
It all starts as usual with a shocker, as Stephan is not only following Klaus but also kills two young women as they scream … good Stephan is gone, for a moment as Klaus left the house I thought Stephan was going to show mercy but as Damon reveals later he does not and to add to that he ripped them apart and put them back together because he feels remorse….that sent a chill down my spine. The blond girl looked him in the eye and asked him not to kill her and our Stephan did it anyway.
Elena’s morning is a somber one, I like that scene it reminded me of the pilot waking up in bed sad over her parents, looking back we spent a significant amount of time in Elena’s bedroom over the past 2 years. Elena wakes Jeremy up and helps Alraic who is an obvious human mess with the Coffee machine. There is a B-day party planning going on hosted by tanned and slimmed Caroline, the bubbliest bad-ass vampire around.
Damon in the bath tub, that man is not afraid of a bubble bath a lesson to men everywhere (Elena’s looking down then turning away as she sees him all soapy is priceless) . Andy is back and let me just say that they have a nice relationship I know he compelled her and such but still they have a nice honest dynamic. Andy is helping Damon find Stephan, as he is staring at multiple maps, news paper articles and post-its with colorful thumbtacks about Stephan’s victims not Klaus’s but Stephan’s . When first we saw Damon’s bedroom and unbelievable bathroom in season 2 I noticed that he’s surprisingly neat and organized, so he is a little OCD.
Jeremy works at the Grill and it is obvious that they are in the middle of the summer so Stephan has been gone for a while and Jenna has been dead for a while too. Over the summer Caroline have been seeing Tyler a lot but only as friend and I was then asking why????
Klaus found what he’s looking for Ray Sutton the werewolf in a bar and with the help of Stephan or actually, he does nothing it was all Stephan,Klaus just barks orders and delivers creepy one-liners. I hated seeing Stephan following Klaus’s orders but in all honesty the throwing wolf spane darts at the werewolf game was kind of an awesome idea.
The Dynamic duo Damon and Alaric “Damonic” 🙂 went to check out Stephan’s last trail and came face to face with Stephan’s victims, the smeared blood all over the walls did not prepare me to the eerie positions the bodies of the girls were found in or the falling blonde head. Caroline and Tyler discuess how when they are supernatural they are ….”excited” all the time foreshadowing the fact that later they will “express their excitement in a physical fashion” to put it lightly hehe .
Damon give Elena her necklace back, I can’t remember why it was lost though?! anyways Damon compels a girl to drink the cheap stuff which was a relief, what teenager has the audacity to drink a bottle of wine with beer provided. Jeremy and Matt smoke a joint as they bond, might it be an indication that Matt will have more screen time this year?
Stephan stops Klaus from dealing with Damon and suggest he deals with it to stop Damon from trailing him. Andy is in a dark studio and we all know she’ll end up dead. I expected Stephan to drop her off at the mansion all chopped up but no he invited Damon to watch. The confrontation ends up with Andy falling to her death,as good as Stephan might be I think he enjoyed this one. After all Damon killed Lexi Stephan’s best friend relatively the same way, I think he was subconsciously waiting for that one for a while. I felt sorry for Andy she really did not deserve it.
Back at the party Alaric is holding down the fort full of his drunk history students and I am glad he pointed that out, because it was weird. Caroline begs Elena to move on with her life and to stop whining about Stephan and while they bicker over it Elena finds Damon’s “mission Stephan” closet and confronts him as he is returning from his unpleasant encounter with Stephan. Damon lets her have it he tells her about Stephan’s victims and the fact that he is gone and it is not the first time it happens. As it turns out Stephan regresses and indulges in blood then bounces back and recovers but this wont be anytime near Elena’s life time (nod to the mortality mention) then he gives her a sympathetic regretful look and leaves .
Tyler and Caroline hook up and it was well….good but not that amazing ….I can hear the booing. The issue to me is the acting especially that of Michael Trevino at that moment in the hall, the words bobbing for apples comes to mind but the rest was quite interesting. I didn’t like Caroline leaving in the middle of the night and not staying or even waking him up as if in her mind it was a hook up and nothing more and as I was contemplating that Tyler’s mom shows up and shoots Caroline with vervain darts…OMG! she knows she is a vampire.
back at the bar Klaus attempts turning the werewolf into a vamwolf by feeding him his blood then killing him. I wonder when the werewolf is a hybrid won’t he be as strong as Klaus ?! so a)why should he listen to him and follow his rules? b) why not rip him apart to get back at all the torturing? Klaus doesn’t believe Stephan’s act and so we hope that it’s all an act but to understand Stephan one has to think of him as an addict.
Best scene: They always save the rewind-worthy scenes for last, as Stephan emerges from the bar he is teary (how I missed whiny old Stephan) and calls Elena who has her phone on silent leading every one in the world watching to scream “pick up you damn phone!” she does, she knows it’s Stephan though he does not speak and she gives him words of encouragement as he is standing there nodding his head unable to say a word. The brilliance in this scene is that we’ve been seeing Stephan as the villain the whole episode wondering if he can be saved but at that moment (with the help of the stellar acting of Paul Wesley) he shrinks into a helpless ball of emotion because he is trapped in his addiction .
What a great beginning for an obviously awesome season. I will leave you with next weeks episode promo “the Hybrid”
In memory of the awesome season finale last week I share this; After the beginning of season 2 I went back and re-watched season 1 of The Vampire Diaries to get a clearer grasp of what’s going on . What I discovered is that the stories are airtight there is no mistakes or oversights from the writers to be seen. Every character had purpose and every action had a explanation.
Last week I had an aha moment when I saw a tweet from a devout Vampire Diaries fan by the twitter name of CanitoSalvatore asked this perceptive question. In last week’s finale how did Katherine get into the house to give Damon the cure for the werewolf bite? ( which on a funny note I retorted : Who cleans the Salvatore house?). Elena owned the house while Katherine was imprisoned by Klaus. As we saw Damon and Stephan had to be invited in by Elena after signing the house over to her, Elijah was suffering and chocking because he was not invited so HOW?!
The only explanation I could find is that Elena was dead for a while after the sacrifice and the house had no owner after her death. If so that raises a lot of potential complications and consequences for her death that may or may not be addressed in season 3.
On this note i will sign off with TVline.com spoilers for season 3 of The Vampire Diaries.
and tvfanatic.com spoilers for season 3
Thursday, my favorite day of the week, has landed .Here is what you should be looking forward to.
NBC Thursday Night Comedy: The best talents in comedy all lined up together for your pleasure:
- Community Season 2 Finale : “For a Few Paintballs More” part 2 of the paintball saga and a sort of a “star wars” review, Greendale collage takes down a mystery enemy.
- The Office : “Dwight K. Schrute, (Acting) Manager” the title alone promises good fun and the misery of others in the office. Dwight brings the reign of hell as he becomes the temporary regional manager of the Scranton Branch.
- Parks and recreation: A delight of 2 episodes YAY! “The fight” Leslie offers Ann a Job at city hall and Ann is cavalier about the offers which ignites their first fight ever. “The Road Trip” Ben and Leslie take a road trip to Indianapolis and Leslie is worried she can’t fight her feelings for Ben anymore (please don’t fight) , Ron takes on an unsuspecting protégé to teach him about government.
- Vampire Diaries :”As I Lay Dying” #poorDamon has been trending on twitter for a reason Damon is dying .He is hallucinating (Delena kiss promised) and trying to die in dignity luckily Stephan is trying to save him. Who is to say what is going to happen the writers of the CW hit have made it clear that no one’s safe this season and the bodies keep piling up .
- The Big bang Theory:“The Engagement Reaction” Howard tells his mom he’s engaged and that news puts her in the hospital . Will we be fortunate enough to meet the screeching mom? I hope not. Sheldon hangs around in the germ infested hospital -that’s always a treat-
Dedicated to my amazing supporter Amani Rabah : you are awesome
It took me a while to write about last week’s The Vampire Diaries episode recap , I needed time for what happened to sink in. Without hesitation ” The Sun Also Rises” is the best episode of TVD to date. The death toll was shocking 4 were killed and only 2 broke my heart. I sobbed during this episode and as the episode finished i had to take time to breath and take in the intensity of this episode.
The darkness started with Caroline and Matt fighting off Tyler the wolf and i was like “Oh Holy ****” boy how little did i know. That ended with Tyler being shot and wounded which allowed Caroline and Matt to make a run for it. I understand that Caroline loves Matt I really do but I don’t understand why. After turning into this amazing vampire she is not Caroline anymore but in a way maybe Matt is her connection to innocence and humanity.
Later Tyler is found lying naked on the floor -that poor guy if that is not a lesson of humility I don’t know what is- and Caroline helps him by covering him up, she is such a great friend, she started the series as annoying and insecure then blossomed into awesome character. turning into a vampire was the best thing that ever happened to her, but Matt doesn’t think so he’s calling Tyler “that thing” and looks at Caroline like she’s a freak and I understand.
Now to the Sacrifice; If there is a creeper setting and a creepier guy than Klaus I haven’t seen it. I expected Klaus to be bad-ass like Elijah but he is really deviant and selfish more than anything else. Elijah is the one that really scares the crap out of me . I knew the sacrifice wont end well but i didn’t expect the sacrifice to work, i kept expecting something to go wrong but Jules got her heart ripped out quickly and swiftly – a moment i waited for so long to see, she was mean to Damon.
and then came Jenna , oh Sara Canning I am sorry i took you for granted. Sara Canning delivered this episode she was amazing. The heart to heart between her and Elena was touching and though it was ominous i really wished she’d make it for her,Elena’s, Alaric’s and Jeremy’s sake sadly i was mistaken. Stephan offered himself instead of Jenna and redeemed himself for the parade of wussy decisions he has made in the past few episodes.I didn’t envy Elena for the devastating heartache she needed to bear. How do you choose? what was she hoping for in that instant? Klaus refused because he has “plans” for Stephan, cue storyline for season 3 🙂
Standing surrounded by fire Elena witnessed her only guardian die as she is engulfed with tears Jenna says it’s O.K and i think it’s to soon for Jenna to be O.k with death but then she heads for Greta as she pieces the puzzle together and tries to take her out Klaus outsmarts her and stakes her in the back and Elena breaks my heart as she yells out “Jenna NO!” damn you Nina Dobrev and her cries are helpless Elena knows there is nothing she can do now -reaching for tissue-.As I am being broken to pieces with Elena she says “just turn it off, you wont be scared anymore” and I am in despair, damn you TVD writers .
Jenna dies as a vampire and it kills me that she died such an ugly death with no goodbye so cruel and sudden, again Sara Canning i will miss you. As Elena has the life sucked out of her she dies in front of Stephan 😦 and then Bonnie comes to the rescue i have never been happier to see Bonnie and boy was she strong. As Klaus is being thrown around Elijah is turns up and proceeds to finish the job as promised and then we discover Klaus kept the bodies of his family and can tell elijeh where to find them and Whoosh! he disappears with Klaus. Now we have a werewolf-vampire hybrid and a family of originals to deal with.
back at the creepy witchy house Damon carries Elena in and tenderly strokes her hair pleading that she wont be a vampire, say what you will but Damon is a passionate he really loves Elena the heat is undeniable. Alaric asks news of Jenna and Damon delivers it without words just a simple shake and i ask how can you say it ? a shake was good enough. Another woman disappears from Alaric’s life with no goodbye…I love Matt Davis, I just do.
Elena wakes up and John Gilbert loses his life force and hits the ground, no runs out to see him, cry for him or even carry him, David Anders i hope TV will realize your worth and will keep you around, great talent.
All wraps up in the funeral scene and as all is laid to rest Damon’s bite still stirs, he tells Stephan what’s going on and Stephan is at loss of what to do,And as Damon walks away looking massively dashing in his suit a little hello from the director Paul M. Sommers in the words “Paul Sommers rest in peace”.
I’ll leave you with next week’s promo. who will save Damon and what more can happen after this week’s stellar episode . “As I Lay Dying” we all thought it would be Elena but the capable writers proved us wrong. What will the world of Damon’s hallucination bring, why is Bonnie crying and bleeding. Will someone else die ?
